The REI Flash 55 stands out due to its impressive combination of affordability, light weight, and practical features. Its great value is a result of its quality materials, a thoughtful design that includes a supportive frame, and a customizable compression system which allows the user to move straps and features around the pack. The Flash also has a rolltop closure, which helps to compact the bag down and provide additional weather resistance. During testing, the pack’s supportive frame handled a 30-pound load well, and the hip belt fit securely with thick foam padding. However, the REI Flash 55 may not be perfect for everyone. The pack’s comfort, while acceptable, isn’t as luxurious as some more expensive options, and the lumbar support is only average. The foam pattern on the back panel could potentially cause pressure points for some users. That being said, comfort is subjective and varies person to person. Additionally, the right hip belt pocket, being mostly mesh, could be more susceptible to wear and tear. The REI Flash 55 is an excellent choice for budget-conscious backpackers who want a lightweight and versatile pack. It’s a great option for those who are new to backpacking or even for thru-hikers who want a more traditional design while keeping the pack weight low. The Flash 55 may not be the most comfortable or feature-rich option on the market. However, its combination of value, features, and light weight make it an easy recommendation.
